Current Happenings!
So, what's your teaching philosophy?

I try to teach based upon how people learn. As a foundation, I believe learning is not a stop-and-go sort of process. Learning is continous and is experienced in every corner of life. It is conducted most effectively in an interesting, community-centered, and authentic environment. That said, I follow a critical inquiry, design-thinking approach to my own instruction. Below, I have attached a great example of what design-thinking appears like in the learning process.

Where is the best place to teach?

Authentic environments. Depending on the content being taught, this environment can change. While standard classrooms are the default choice for the majority of subjects taught, I am a firm supporter of place-based education. Interacting in such an environment goes beyond just a field trip experience; place-based education offers students the chance to learn within a context related to the content being unpacked.

What do you like most about your job?

I like working and learning with diverse young adults. I enjoy never having the same day twice, too!

How do you get your students excited about learning?

It depends on what they are excited about! Reading about topics which students find interest in always leads to a more engaged and exciting class. Using new technologies and strategies which encourage students to wrestle with hard questions and thoroughly consider texts of various kinds.
If you had a choice, would you rather be a pirate or a ninja?

Pirate! Ninjas are bound by such a strict code, I would much rather sail the seas with only my ambition to drive me.
